Why Impresa

Having been counsel, client, and members of management, Impresa lawyers combine legal acumen and business savvy help clients better assess risk, strengthen compliance, improve operations, enhance performance, address legal issues, and defend their interests.

Lateral Recruitment

Impresa is continually looking for talented, experienced partner-level attorneys. Please contact George Kostel (georgekostel@impresalegal.com) if you are interested in discussing Impresa’s unique approach to the practice of law.

Why the name "Impresa?"

Impresa has an important meaning to our founders. The name of the firm derives from the founders’ shared values of quality, dedication, and service. In the end, the name Impresa stems from shared family values.

Co-Founder, Jason Matechak’s father is a Naval Academy graduate, Vietnam veteran, Navy Test pilot, and a stroke survivor. As Jason’s father rehabbed from his stroke, he recalled his service in Vietnam as an aircraft carrier-based A-4 Skyhawk pilot — missions accomplished and colleagues lost. When thinking about a firm name, our founders were drawn to the idea of an aircraft carrier is a relatively small thing compared the grandness of the ocean, but when called upon an aircraft carrier can accomplish great things.

Inspired by his father’s service on the USS Enterprise, Jason, as the one-time General Counsel of an Inter-Governmental International Organization based in Rome, Italy decided to translate “Enterprise” into Italian. Using “google translate,” “Enterprise” translated into Italian, returned “Impresa.” When translated back into English, it returned “strong, firm.”

After confirming with a native Spanish speaking colleague that an “Impresa” in Spanish was a seal of authenticity often placed on official court documents, Jason offered the name Impresa to George Kostel, the firm’s co-founder. George smiled and asked, “Do you know where the keel of the Enterprise was laid?” — and answering his own question he said, “My hometown of Newport News, where my father practiced as a lawyer for 44 years.” The Impresa name was born of shared values and an interlocking family history.

The firm is now a strong group of professionals, who have had years of experience in business, public service, and of course, the practice of law. Impresa lawyers are grounded in their calling as lawyers, recognize their role in promoting the rule of law and enhancing the legal profession, support the missions of their clients with pride and dedication all while striving to provide value for money, and recognize that they stand on the shoulders of those who came before them – both legal professionals and family members.

Though together for a relatively short time, the Impresa team has accomplished results that clients have described as “impressive.”
